Basic Obedience: Day 15 of 56

This video and training is part of the Basic Obedience Concept, a structured program to promote obedience and the bond between human and dog. The concept is carefully designed didactically and methodically to ensure that each exercise builds on the previous one, thus achieving maximum effectiveness. It is crucial that you carry out the training in the intended order to achieve the best possible results for your dog.

The command "Sit" is one of the first that most dog owners teach their dog – and for good reason. It's a simple command that is helpful in many everyday situations. Whether you need to briefly stop your dog from running off, or you want to guide them to wait calmly, "Sit" is a real everyday helper. But "Sit" means more than just sitting down: it also means that your dog learns to step back, give you more attention, and not be immediately reactive.

In this blog, we'll show you step-by-step how to teach your dog a reliable "Sit" – both at home and in distracting environments like the park. Are you ready to teach your dog this useful command? Then let's get started!

Goal: Your dog sits down immediately on command and remains seated until another command or the release command is given.

Equipment: Treats, collar, leash

Location: Low-distraction environment, later different locations

Duration: 5-10 repetitions, then a break

Why Eye Contact is So Important in Training

"Sit" is one of the most important everyday aids and thus a command that your dog absolutely must know. The "Sit" command is easy for any dog to learn and increases motivation in training through quick successes. "Sit" means "Sit" until the human releases it. This is where the first challenge begins. You will learn that a well-mastered "Sit" involves more. Whether it's a problem dog or a dog without behavioral issues - if your dog masters the "Sit" command correctly, you can manage many situations, because with a properly trained and learned "Sit," your dog is always controllable. What more could you want?

Teaching your dog to "Sit" is easy. Getting the dog to maintain the "Sit" even with distractions is a little trickier. Most dogs can achieve a reliable "Sit" at home, but how many can do it outdoors in a stimulating environment in the middle of a park? We want your dog to be able to do it in both situations, namely in calm and stimulating environments. "Sit" not only means that the dog sits down, but also that your dog takes a step back, gives you better attention, and is not immediately reactive.

The Authors: Paulina & Lui

Paulina and Lui are the heart and soul behind Vitomalia [Dogstraining & Store]. Their journey in dog training began with the adoption of their first Listenhund, Vito. This experience sparked their deep interest in teaching other dog owners about dog behavior and training. Initially, this was merely a hobby, but with the adoption of Amalia, an American Pitbull bitch who was rehomed multiple times due to severe behavioral issues, their passion developed into a true calling. Amalia's particular behavioral challenges intensified their interest in dog training and behavioral therapy. This turning point led Paulina and Lui to leave their original career paths, pursue intensive further education, and fully dedicate themselves to dog training. Their work with human-dog teams also revealed a gap in the dog market: there was a lack of safe and high-quality dog accessories specifically for medium and large breeds.

From this realization, Vitomalia [Dogstraining & Store] was born, combining their commitment to professional dog training with the need for quality dog accessories. Paulina and Lui bring their personal experiences, extensive knowledge, and passion for dogs into every product to support human-dog teams in their life together.

Training steps

  1. Vorbereiten: Leckerli bereit, ruhige Umgebung, Hund entspannt.
  6. Generalisieren: In andere Räume, in den Garten, dann an den Spazierweg übertragen.
